HistoricPathways site - Broken Link

Hello Ms. Mills,

I apologize for posting this here but i didn't know how else to contact you.  On your alternate website Historic Pathways.com where you graciously let students of genealogical methods view some of your documents,  one of your links is broken.

The View link for

"Samuel Witter: Research Report (with Attachments)"

does NOT pull up a pdf.  Instead it pulls up a screen "For Best Viewing, Get Adobe Reader X or later.

Even clearing cache and cookies - and restarting my browser I am unable to view this pdf.  I have tried using Googe Chrome and Firefox Browsers.

At some point would be interested in reviewing this particular file as it forms a nice continuity of methodology from analysis - workplan - research notes - research report for an individual's life. a valuable learning tool.

Cheers,

Shelley B

Shelley, sorry to hear you've had a problem. The issue is not a broken link. The issue is that Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge now have their own default PDF viewer built in, which they naturally want everyone to useHowever, their viewers are simplistic ones that cannot handle more-complex PDF documents such as this one with embedded attachments.

The problem is fixable with both Chrome and Firefox, by telling each that we want to use Adobe (see instructions below). Those of us who have the Edge version of Win 10, rather than the IE 11 version of Win 10, are given no choice at all because the "Tools" option no longer exists. To view complex PDF documents, we'll need to use Chrome or Firefox; but we'll need to use their manage-extensions tool to use Adobe.

Attached are links to three screen captures that explain how to make this simple change in Chrome and Firefox.

Hell Ms. Mills,

I modified my Google Chrome settings as your link showed and that did the trick.  Thank you very much.

Technology these days a blessing and a curse.

Have a great day

Cheers
