I think I have another doozy.  How would I go about writing a citation for this image?

The record is not indexed so you can't use the database "U.S. Atlantic Ports Passenger Lists, 1820-183 and 1893-1959."  Instead over on the right side of the page where it says Browse this Collection,

choose Roll Based,

choose M575-Atlantic, Gulf and Great Lakes 1820-1873,

choose Roll 16,

then choose all. The images I want to cite are 452 and 453.

This is a working my working citation:

Savannah, Georgia, "Arrival of Foreign Emigrants in the District of Savannah for the Quarter Ending 31st December 1851," Bark Wexford, arriving in Savannah 24 November 1851; accessed via "U.S. Atlantic Port Passenger Lists 1820-1873 and 1893-1969," digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 27 Sept 2015), chose browse this collection, choose Roll Based, choose Series M575 "Atlantic, Gulf & Great Lakes, 1820-1873," choose roll number 16, image 452 & 453; citing National Archives microfilm publications M575 roll 16, Record Group 36.

Maybe I'm making this too complicated.  I have written this citation in 4 different ways.  Please tell me if I included all the right elements and if it is clear enough to guide someone else to the image.  I sure do appreciate you being here for us.  Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Leflake, those Savannah records are really giving you a workout!

Yes, it's possible to make the citation a bit less complicated:

Savannah, Georgia, "Arrival of Foreign Emigrants in the District of Savannah for the Quarter Ending 31st December 1851," roll of Bark Wexford, arriving 24 November 1851; imaged, "U.S. Atlantic Port Passenger Lists 1820-1873 and 1893-1969," Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 27 Sept. 2015), Browse This Collection > Roll Based > Series M575, "Atlantic, Gulf & Great Lakes, 1820-1873" > roll 16, images 452 & 453; citing National Archives microfilm publication M575, roll 16.

Your suggested citation is clear and understandable, but if you use the conventional > sign, to indicate the drill-down path, you can make the citation significantly shorter.

I also tweaked a couple of other points:

  • Ship names are conventionally italicized (EE 2.68).
  • Miss Thistlebottom and other grammar mavens still insist upon using periods at the end of abbreviations (and you'll spot a couple of other punctuation issues).
