Citing Photocopies

22 February 2014

When we receive a photocopy of a document or page from a record book—whether it’s from an official or unofficial source—our citation needs to identify the channel through which we received it.

EE 7.19 offers sample citations of photocopies received from (1) a church archivist, (2) a fellow researcher who supplied an identification of the record, and (3) a correspondent whose photocopied baptismal act does not identify the register or page, the church, or the archives where the document can be accessed.

And, of course:  If the provider did not place a citation on that photocopy, we definitely need to remedy that problem!
