I have a slightly unusual question about references to the same image in an online article. You'll have to bear with me while I try and untangle what I think I'm trying to achieve ...
I want to display three images of the same document: one full and two heavily cropped for effect and the for the lead image. The proveance of the image is quite complicated so I only want to put that in a reference note once, and then use something like hereinafter to cite it again for the other instances.
In the body of the article, I would like to use the cropped versions before the full version since it would help mak it more readable. Also, the failings of Facebook and Google+ mean that trying to use anything other than the first image as the lead image is bound to fail (e.g. on re-sharing).
My (perceived) problem is that I wanted to include the full provenance details with the full image, rather than with the cropped ones, but I also want the cropped images to appear first in the article. Do you have a recommendation for how to organise my reference notes?

Tony, if this were my problem, I'd probably handle it this way.
1. Use the full citation at the first cropped image, giving the image a name that can be easily re-cited.
2. Add a sentence at the end of the citation to say that I will, at a later point, use expanded versions of that image.
3. When I insert the next image and create a citation for it, I use the name of the image for my short form cite and add the words "expanded image."

Thanks for that explanation. It's pretty much was I was thinking of doing, but I wasn't confident because it all seemed a bit messy. I searched around but couldn't find anyone else having encountered the same problem.
